Stuck at the Same Weight for Weeks? Here's What's Really Going On
Watch: Meals for maximum weight loss and how to break a plateau

You were doing so well, and then it all just parked itself. Before you decide something is broken, let me show you where the leaks usually are. I have found every one of them in my own kitchen.

You were doing so well. The meals felt good, the energy was coming back, things were genuinely moving. And then, almost overnight, it all just parked itself. The progress you could feel week to week went quiet, and your brain immediately reached for the worst explanation: something must be broken.

I want to say this clearly before we go any further. A stall is almost never your metabolism breaking. I spent years terrified I had somehow damaged my body, that I was the exception the rules did not apply to. I was not. And neither are you. A plateau is information, not a verdict. It is your body and your habits quietly telling you that something has drifted, and drift is fixable once you know where to look.

Plateaus are usually a slow drift, not a sudden break

Here is what actually happens. Nobody decides to undo their own progress. Instead, a hundred tiny things creep back in. The serving spoon gets a bit more generous. A glug of oil sneaks into the pan because you were rushing. The handful of nuts gets bigger. A couple of dates here, a lick of peanut butter there. You finish the kids' leftovers standing at the counter. Movement tapers off because life got busy.

None of these is a crime, and none of them alone would matter. But stacked together over a couple of weeks, they quietly close the gap that was driving your progress. I know because every one of those is something I have caught myself doing.

Be a detective, not a judge

This is why I always say treat a stall like a detective, not a judge. A judge turns up looking for someone to blame, which is always yourself, and that just adds shame on top of frustration. A detective gets curious. A detective looks at the evidence with calm, honest eyes and asks, what actually changed here?

One of those approaches makes you want to quit. The other one solves the problem.

Where the leaks usually hide

Look honestly at the last two weeks. Not in a punishing way, just an observant one.

Has oil crept back in? Even "just a little" for the roasties. Are the higher fat things bigger than they were? Nut butter, avocado, tahini, seeds. Has the sweet stuff shifted from fruit to dates and syrup? Have the wet starches (potatoes, rice, porridge) been swapped for dry ones (bread, wraps, crackers)? Has the veg on the front of the plate quietly shrunk? Is there snacking after dinner that is not hunger? Has walking dropped off?

Most people find the leak within a few minutes. It is rarely mysterious.

The fix is a nudge, not a crackdown

The fix is almost never to eat less and less and less. That is the diet-brain trap, and it backfires every time, because shrinking your food sets up the binge that wipes out the whole effort. The fix is to tighten back up to what was already working, and lower your intake marginally from where you are.

Go back to the big plates of veg first. Move the oil back out. Cap the fats at a tablespoon of flax and a quarter of an avocado. Sweeten with fruit again. Brush your teeth after dinner. Then stay consistent and give your body a chance to catch up, because it will. Everyone plateaus. It is not the end of anything. It is just the next small adjustment.

Zoom out

There is a bigger idea under all of this. Your tiny daily choices are always steering you somewhere. Not just on the scale, but in who you are becoming. Every ordinary little decision is a vote. You do not need a huge surge of motivation to change direction. You just need to notice where you are pointed and make the next small choice on purpose.

That is freeing, because it means a plateau is not a wall. It is a nudge to course-correct before staying stuck gets expensive.

Watch: I talked through exactly how I handle a stall, plus a day of meals built to get things moving, in Meals for maximum weight loss and how to break a plateau.

So breathe, lovely. Get curious instead of cruel with yourself. Plateaus break for people who keep going, and that includes you.

Quick answers

Why have I stopped losing weight on a plant-based diet?

Almost always a slow drift: oil back in the pan, bigger handfuls of nuts, a few extra dates, finishing the kids' leftovers, less movement. Small things stacked over a couple of weeks.

How do I break a weight loss plateau?

Go back to what was working. More veg on the front of the plate, wet starches instead of dry, healthy fats capped, no snacking after dinner. Lower your intake marginally, not dramatically.

Is my metabolism broken?

Almost certainly not. A plateau is information, not a verdict. Your body has adjusted to a new weight and needs a small nudge, not a crackdown.
