How I Stay on Track on a Busy Work Day (Without Thinking About It)
By Ami · 21 June 2026 · 5 min read

I had a rare day with an empty house and a mountain of work. By lunchtime I had eaten a plate of apple, carrots and sugar snaps and drunk a full glass of water without noticing. That is the whole trick.
I had one of those rare days where the house was empty. Daughter at nursery, son at school, and a backlog of work that had been giving me the fear for a week. I woke up on a roll and I did not want anything, including food, to get in the way.
So here is exactly what I did, because it is the system I use on every busy day, and it is the reason I stay consistent without needing willpower I do not have.
Prep the snacks before the day starts
At eight in the morning, before I opened the laptop, I cut up an apple, a couple of carrots and a handful of sugar snap peas and put them on a plate right next to where I was going to sit. I filled a massive glass of water and put it beside the plate.
By lunchtime, the plate was empty and the glass was empty and I genuinely did not remember eating or drinking any of it. My attention was completely on the work. My hands just did what hands do when there is a plate of food next to them. And because the plate was apple and carrots rather than biscuits, autopilot worked for me instead of against me.
That is the whole trick. When your brain is elsewhere, your environment eats for you. So make the environment good.
Batch a soup from whatever is in the freezer
While the kettle was boiling, I threw a bag of frozen broccoli and cauliflower, a potato, the broccoli stalks from the day before, two carrots, an onion, water and a stock cube into a pot and let it bubble away. Blended it later. That is a ready meal for any point in the day, hot in two minutes, no decisions required.
Starch the night before
I had baked sweet potatoes the night before, sitting in the fridge. That is my backup. If the soup runs out, if I am ravenous at four, if dinner goes sideways, there is a sweet potato. Being prepared is honestly one of the most important things you can do on this journey. It sounds boring. It is the difference between staying on track and grabbing whatever is nearest.
Question the coffee
Little one. I noticed I was reaching for a cup of coffee not because I wanted the coffee, but because I wanted something to sip. If that is you too, just have a massive glass of water. You stay hydrated and you skip the milk and the habit.
Get the movement in first
I did a rebounder session and a leg workout from YouTube before I started work, because a run of terrible sleep with the kids had pushed exercise out for too long. I am not saying you need to. Food is the thing that moves the scale. But movement makes me feel like myself, and on a heavy work day, feeling like myself matters.
Bulk out dinner and keep the plate 50/50
Dinner was a fat-free cauliflower alfredo pasta. Cauliflower blended with nutritional yeast, garlic, lemon, salt, onion powder and hemp seeds. And I padded it out with red cabbage, courgette, tomatoes and carrots so the bowl was enormous for the same calories. When I went back for seconds, I loaded up the veg again first, not just more pasta. Half the plate is always veg. Even the second plate.
And when I felt totally full, I stopped, with pasta still in the pan. I love it when I can actually hear my hunger and fullness properly. That only happens when I am not starving, which only happens when I have prepped.
Eat for the weather you are in
One more thing. What I fancy is completely dependent on the season. In summer it is salads and smoothies and pineapple ice cream in a wine glass. In winter it is huge soups and stews. Both can be low calorie density and whole food. You do not have to copy someone's Instagram salad if you are cold and want a stew. Eat what feels right for where you are, as long as the plate is mostly the light stuff.
Watch: The whole day, the snack plate, the soup, my daughter helping make the piña colada ice cream, is in Staying consistent on a busy work day.
Prep the plate, lovely, and then forget about it. Let the environment do the eating.

Quick answers
How do I eat healthy when I am too busy to cook?
Prep before the day starts. Cut fruit and veg at 8am and put them by your desk, boil a big pot of soup from whatever is in the freezer, and have sweet potatoes baked the night before as a backup.
What are good snacks for weight loss at a desk?
Apple, carrots, sugar snap peas, cherry tomatoes, grapes, orange segments. Light, crunchy, and sitting where you will reach for them without thinking.
How do I stop mindless eating while working?
You probably can't, so make the mindless stuff good. If the only things within reach are cut veg, fruit and a big glass of water, autopilot works in your favour.
