The Soup-First Trick I Swear By
By Ami · 12 June 2026 · 5 min read

My favourite free trick: have something big and light before a meal, like veg soup or salad, so you arrive half full and naturally eat less of the rich stuff.
One of my very favourite little tricks costs absolutely nothing, takes hardly any effort, and works an absolute treat. Here it is, in all its simple glory: before a meal, especially a heavier or richer one, I have something big and light first. A nice bowl of vegetable soup. A great pile of salad. A piece of fruit. Something gentle and filling to go in ahead of the main event.
It sounds almost too simple to bother with, doesn't it? But that's rather the point. The best habits usually are simple. By the time the richer food arrives, I'm already pleasantly half full, so I naturally eat less of the heavy stuff, and crucially, I do it without any sense of missing out or holding back. I'm not depriving myself of a single thing. I'm just rearranging the order so the gentle, water-rich food gets first go at filling me up. My appetite does the rest on its own.
Why filling up on the gentle stuff first works so well
The whole reason this works comes back to calorie density, which is the idea at the heart of everything we do. Foods that are mostly water and fibre, your soups and salads and veg and fruit, are light for their size. They take up loads of room and satisfy your hunger beautifully while staying gentle. So when you lead with them, you're using their lovely bulk to take the edge off your appetite before you ever get to the richer, more concentrated food.
And it's not about willpower at all, which is exactly why I love it. You're not sitting there gritting your teeth, trying to talk yourself out of a second helping. You're simply not as hungry by the time the rich stuff is in front of you, so eating a sensible amount of it feels easy and natural rather than like a sacrifice. You work with your appetite instead of fighting it. That's always, always the way to do this. The minute it becomes a fight, it stops being sustainable.
It even works when you're out
This is the bit that makes it genuinely practical for real life, because we don't eat at home all the time, do we? The soup-first trick travels beautifully. When you're out at a restaurant, just order a brothy soup or a side of veg or a simple salad to start. Have your gentle, light thing first, just as you would at home, and let it quietly do its job before the main course turns up.
You arrive at the main event already a bit full, so you enjoy it properly without overdoing it, and you feel lovely afterward rather than stuffed and regretful. It takes all the white-knuckle anxiety out of eating out, which so many of us find stressful when we're trying to look after ourselves. No drama, no deprivation, just a smart little starter doing the heavy lifting for you. And of course, if it's a special occasion, you enjoy the whole thing fully, because one meal never made or broke anyone. It's the everyday pattern that counts.
Simple, but it really works
I know it's not flashy. There's no clever gadget and no secret ingredient. But that's exactly why it's lasted for me where so many complicated things didn't. Fill up on the gentle stuff first, and the rest of the meal sorts itself out. It's one of those tiny habits that costs you nothing and quietly pays off every single day.
Watch
I filmed a full day of doing exactly this, soup and veg and fruit before every meal, so you can see how it looks on an actual plate rather than just in theory: A full day of preloading. It's full of ideas you can pinch.
Fill up on the gentle stuff first, lovely. Simple, but it works, and that's the whole point.

Quick answers
What is preloading?
Eating something big, light and water-rich before your main meal, like a veggie soup, a salad, or a couple of carrots, so you are half full before the richer food arrives.
Does eating soup before a meal help you lose weight?
Yes. A brothy vegetable soup fills your stomach for very few calories, so you naturally eat less of the heavier food that follows, with no willpower involved.
What can I preload with at a restaurant?
A brothy soup, a side salad with dressing on the side, a plate of steamed veg. Or a couple of carrots in the car park. No shame.
