Overcomplicating Your Plant-Based Eating? Here's Your Permission to Strip It Back
Watch: Getting back to basics

Drowning in recipes and rules? Here's your permission to make it dull. A handful of easy meals on repeat is what actually works, not fancy and complicated.

Can I let you in on something a bit unglamorous? I eat fairly similar things most days. Not because I have to, and not because I've run out of ideas, but because I've learned that simple, repeatable meals are what actually keep me on track. And I think a lot of us are quietly making this whole thing far harder than it needs to be.

If you're currently drowning in saved recipes, screenshots of meals you'll "definitely try," and a head full of rules about what you should and shouldn't eat, here is your official permission slip: you're allowed to make it dull. Truly. The fancy, the elaborate, the brand-new-recipe-every-night approach is lovely now and then, but it is almost never the thing that gets anyone where they want to go. Simple is.

A handful of meals on repeat is a feature, not a flaw

We've somehow been sold the idea that variety at every meal is the goal, and that eating similar things means you're doing it wrong or you're boring. I want to gently bin that idea for you. Eating a small rotation of meals you genuinely love is not a failure of imagination. It's a system, and a brilliant one.

When you've got, say, five or six core meals you can make without thinking, something wonderful happens. There are no decisions to wear you down, no nightly "what on earth do I make" spiral, no standing in front of the fridge at six o'clock feeling defeated. You just reach for one of your trusty meals and get on with it. The mental load drops away, and that freed-up energy is no small thing when you're a busy woman with a hundred other things to think about.

Decision fatigue is the real enemy

Here's why this matters more than it might seem. Every choice you have to make takes a little something out of you, and by the end of a long day there's often very little left in the tank. That's exactly when an overcomplicated plan falls apart, because deciding what to cook from scratch feels like one job too many, and suddenly whatever's nearest and easiest wins.

Strip the deciding out and you've removed the very thing that trips most people up. A simple, repeatable way of eating means the good choice is already made before you're tired enough to talk yourself out of it. You're not relying on willpower at the worst possible moment. You've quietly designed it so willpower barely comes into it.

Build your handful of easy core meals

So how do you actually do this? Sit down and think about the plant-based meals you genuinely enjoy and can make easily. A big pot of something cosy, a tray of roasted veg with potatoes, a comforting chilli, a quick stir-fry, a soup you can batch. The ones that fill you up nicely, that you don't get sick of, that come together without a fuss.

Lean on leftovers while you're at it. Cook a bit extra and tomorrow's lunch is simply done, which means you're not a hungry monster grabbing whatever's nearest later on. Pop these few meals on rotation and let them be your default. Keep the exciting new recipes for when you fancy a bit of fun, but don't ask them to carry the whole job. Simple and repeatable is what you can actually keep up week after week.

Tasty and dull are not opposites

And let me be clear, because I know "dull" might put you off. Simple doesn't mean joyless or bland. My everyday meals are genuinely delicious. They're just not complicated. You can have food you look forward to that also happens to be easy and familiar. In fact, that combination, tasty and effortless, is exactly the sweet spot you're aiming for, because that's the food you'll still be happily eating in a year's time.

The heart of this is really just stopping the overthinking and getting back to basics, and I filmed exactly that: a day of stripping it right back to the simple meals that work, broccoli pakora and an oat pear crumble included. Have a look at Getting back to basics.

So strip it right back, my love. Pick your handful of easy favourites, put them on repeat, and let it be wonderfully, productively boring. Keep it simple and keep it going.

Quick answers

Is it okay to eat the same meals every day for weight loss?

It is one of the best things you can do. Repetition removes the nightly deciding, and deciding when you are tired is when the takeaway menu wins.

What are simple plant-based meals for busy people?

Porridge, jacket potato with beans, a big pot of lentil soup, rice and a bean chilli, a tray of roasted veg and potatoes. None need more than five ingredients.

Why do I feel overwhelmed trying to eat healthy?

Too many saved recipes and too many rules. Pick five meals, put them on rotation, and let the exciting recipes be occasional fun rather than the daily plan.
