Motivation Always Runs Out. Then What?
Watch: Meals for maximum weight loss and the power of building tiny habits

We wait to feel motivated, treat it like a starting gun, and then decide we have failed when it disappears on day four. The problem was never you. It was building the whole thing on motivation.

Here is the trap almost all of us fall into. We wait to feel motivated. We treat motivation like the starting gun, the thing that has to fire before we are allowed to begin. And then, when it does not show up, or when it shows up for three glorious days and vanishes, we decide we have failed again.

But the problem was never you. The problem was building the whole thing on motivation in the first place, because motivation is the most unreliable friend you will ever have. It turns up when you do not need it, on the days everything is already going well. And it ghosts you completely on the hard days, the tired ones, the ones where you most needed it.

If your healthy eating depends on feeling inspired, you have handed the keys to the flakiest character in your life.

The women who get there are not more motivated than you

I want this to land, because it is one of the most freeing things I know. The women who actually get there and keep it are not more motivated than you. They do not have some bottomless well of inspiration you missed out on. What they have is habits that run on autopilot, so they do not need to feel like it.

I am not motivated most mornings. I am tired, the kids are loud, and I want a cup of tea. But the porridge gets made because porridge is what happens in the morning. The fruit gets eaten because the fruit is on the counter. The teeth get brushed after dinner because that is what I do. None of that needs motivation. It just needs to have already become a habit.

Tiny habits, stacked

This is how I built it, and it is the opposite of an overhaul. You do not change everything on Monday. You add one tiny thing. Something so small you cannot fail at it.

Add broccoli to the takeaway you were having anyway. Eat an apple before lunch. Have porridge for breakfast three days this week. Just that. When it has become automatic, and it will, add the next one. Swap the oil for water in the pan. Put the fruit bowl where you can see it. Bring food when you leave the house.

Each one is nothing on its own. Stacked over a few months, they are a completely different way of living, and you never once had to summon the willpower for a big dramatic change. That is the power of tiny habits. They are boring, and boring is what lasts.

It is the average that shapes you

Another piece that takes so much pressure off. One rough day, or one indulgent weekend, gets absorbed completely by months of steady, ordinary consistency. It is the average over time that shapes your body, not any single meal. So no single slip is a disaster, and no single perfect day is a triumph. It is the quiet, repeated stuff in the middle that does the work.

That means you can stop chasing perfect and start aiming for "showed up again." The days that count are not the exciting, motivated ones. They are the dull Tuesdays where you did not feel like it and had the porridge anyway.

Stop waiting to feel ready

I watched people eat this way on YouTube for ten years before I did it. Ten years of waiting to feel ready. I never did feel ready. I just started, badly, and let the habits build. If I could go back, that is the one thing I would tell myself: you will not feel like it, do it anyway, and make the first step tiny enough that you cannot say no.

Watch: I talked through exactly how I build these little habits, alongside a day of big meals, in Meals for maximum weight loss and the power of building tiny habits.

Show up on the dull days, lovely. That is genuinely the whole secret. Not more motivation, just habits that do not need it.

Quick answers

How do I stay motivated to lose weight?

You mostly don't, and that is fine. Build habits that run without motivation: same breakfast most days, veg on the counter, snacks prepped, teeth brushed after dinner. The habit does the work on the days you do not feel like it.

What is a tiny habit for weight loss?

Something so small you cannot fail at it. Add a handful of veg to whatever you were already having. Drink a glass of water before lunch. Eat one piece of fruit a day. Then stack the next one on top.

Why do I keep giving up on healthy eating?

Usually because the plan needs you to feel inspired to follow it. A plan should work on a rubbish Tuesday. If it only works on a motivated Monday, it is not a plan.
