How A Lifelong Vegan Finally Got It Right
Watch: My starch solution weight loss journey, 45 lbs down and counting

Being plant-based isn't automatically slimming. I was vegan for years before I felt in control of my weight. Here is the one idea that finally turned the lights on.

Here's something people always find surprising about me. I was vegan for years and years before I ever truly felt in control of my weight. I had the ethics sorted, the kitchen full of lentils and lovely veg, the whole plant-based life. And I still struggled. For ages I assumed that meant something was wrong with me, because surely if you're eating all the "right" things, it's meant to just work?

It doesn't. And realising that was the start of everything changing for me. Being plant-based is wonderful for so many reasons, but it is not automatically slimming. You can eat beautifully wholesome vegan food and still feel stuck, because the piece I was missing had nothing to do with whether my food was plant-based. It had to do with how filling that food was for the energy it carried. That one idea, calorie density, is what finally turned the lights on.

Why "doing everything right" still left me stuck

For years I did what so many of us do. I tried to white-knuckle my way slimmer by eating less. I'd get properly starving, hold out as long as I could, and then of course I'd cave and eat the lot, and feel rubbish about it. I tried the raw diets and the very low-calorie approaches, all the things that promise the world, and every single one of them left me hungrier than when I started. Restriction always loses in the end, my love, because your body is cleverer and more stubborn than any rule you try to impose on it.

What I didn't understand back then was that some plant foods are light for their size and some are very concentrated. I was leaning hard on the concentrated ones, the oils and the bigger handfuls of nuts and the richer bits, and topping up with tiny portions of everything else because I thought small plates were the goal. So I was always a little bit hungry and never quite satisfied. No wonder I couldn't keep it up.

The day calorie density clicked

Once I learned how it actually works, it was honestly a bit emotional. The foods that are mostly water and fibre, your potatoes, your veg, your fruit, your beans and whole grains, are gentle for their volume. That means you can pile your plate high, eat until you're genuinely full and content, and still be moving in the right direction. The trick was never smaller portions. It was filling my plate with the lighter, water-rich, fibre-rich stuff and easing off the heavy oils that were quietly carrying most of the load.

So my meals got bigger, not smaller. I ate more of the food I loved, not less. And, for the first time in my whole adult life, it came off and stayed off without me feeling deprived or obsessed or hungry. I went from fighting my appetite to working with it. That's the difference, and it's everything.

You are not broken, you're just missing a piece

If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right and it still isn't working, I really need you to hear this part. You are not broken. You haven't failed. You're not lacking some special willpower gene that thinner people have and you don't. You're almost certainly just missing the one piece I was missing for all those years. And the lovely thing about a missing piece is that once you have it, you have it. It's not a battle you have to win again every Monday. It's just knowledge, and knowledge sticks.

This is genuinely why I do what I do now. I cannot stand the thought of another woman spending years feeling like a failure when she's simply never been shown how the thing actually works.

Quick answers

Why am I overweight on a vegan diet?

Because vegan is not the same as low calorie density. Oil, nuts, vegan cheese, processed vegan food and big portions of the concentrated stuff add up fast. The fix is building your plate from the water-rich, fibre-rich plants.

Can you lose weight on a vegan diet?

Yes, and without hunger, once you understand calorie density. I lost 66 lbs eating bigger portions than I ever did before.

What is the starch solution?

A whole food plant-based way of eating built around starches like potatoes, rice and beans, with lots of veg and fruit and no oil. It is the foundation of how I eat.
