The 4pm Cupboard Raid: The Fix That Isn't Willpower
Watch: Easy meals to make you thin, eating huge portions

You eat a sensible little lunch because you are being good. By four o'clock you have been to the cupboard six times. I lived that for years. The fix is the opposite of what diet-brain tells you.

Let me describe a day that might sound familiar. You eat a sensible, slightly-too-small lunch because you are trying to be good. An hour later you are back in the kitchen for a little something. Then again an hour after that. By four o'clock you have drifted to the cupboard more times than you can count, you have nibbled your way through who-knows-what, and you feel vaguely out of control and cross with yourself.

The 4pm cupboard raid. I know it so well I could draw you a map of my old kitchen from memory.

It is a signal, not a weakness

Here is the reframe that changed it for me. That constant grazing is almost never a willpower problem. It is a signal. Your body keeps sending you back to the kitchen because your actual meals are not big or satisfying enough to hold you. You have left it hungry, so it keeps asking. And asking.

The grazing is not you being weak. It is your body doing its job and trying to get the fullness it was short-changed at lunch.

And there is a sneaky version of this I fell into for ages. I was so focused on fruit and veg that I was unconsciously restricting the starch. Lots of salad, not enough potato. I thought I was being extra good. I was just extra hungry, and by mid-afternoon I would eat anything that was not nailed down. I was not trusting the process. I was not, as I like to say, surrendering to the starch.

The counterintuitive fix: eat bigger meals

So the solution is the opposite of what diet-brain tells you. Diet-brain says you are snacking too much, you need more discipline, eat even less. That is exactly backwards and it will keep you trapped.

The real fix is to make your actual meals bigger and more satisfying, so your body has no reason to nag you between them. And you can do that without working against your goals, as long as you build them from the right foods. Potatoes, rice, beans, lentils, a mountain of veg, plenty of fruit. Light for their size, heavy on fullness.

A proper lunch for me is not a sad little salad. It is a huge jacket potato with a tin of beans and a pile of salad on the side. Or a giant bowl of soup, a soupy porridge, a leftover chilli over rice with extra veg stirred through. If in doubt, potatoes. Always potatoes.

Fill up at meals, coast between them

This is the rhythm I want you to aim for. Fill up properly at your meals, then coast. When lunch is a generous, satisfying plate of whole plants, the afternoon looks completely different. The pull to the cupboard fades because the need behind it has been met. You are not white-knuckling past the snacks. You simply do not want them as much, because you are full.

If you do get peckish, that is what the snack platter is for. Grapes, orange segments, cucumber, a couple of carrots, left out where you will see them. The nibble lands on something light, and your lunch tomorrow gets a little bigger.

A few small shifts that stack up

Bigger meals is the big one, but a few little things help it along. Have a warm drink at 4pm, tea or hot water with lemon, because sometimes it is just something to do with your hands. Keep the heavier snacks like dates and nut butter out of the house so the cupboard has nothing exciting in it. And eat fairly similar lunches day to day, so you are not standing at the fridge at one o'clock deciding, because deciding is when things go wrong.

Watch: For a day of the kind of meals that actually hold me, have a look at Easy meals to make you thin, eating huge portions. Nothing in there is small.

Before you reach for more willpower, lovely, reach for a bigger lunch. Fill up at meals, coast between them, and watch the 4pm raid quietly sort itself out.

Quick answers

Why do I snack all afternoon?

Usually because lunch was too small or too light on starch. Your body keeps sending you back to the kitchen to make up the shortfall. It is a signal, not a weakness.

How do I stop grazing between meals?

Make your actual meals bigger and more filling. Build lunch around potatoes, rice, beans and a mountain of veg so you are properly full, then coast until dinner.

What is a filling plant-based lunch for weight loss?

A big jacket potato with beans and a pile of salad, a huge bowl of soup with a rice cake or two, or a leftover chilli over rice with extra veg. Volume from whole plants, no oil.
